#Disability in school

Hey, I’m looking for some guidance from some members of the disabled community.

I’m a disabled teen on the younger side, and I’m going to be going into the school year using a cane / forearm crutches for the first time (hooray!) after: 1. Finally being diagnsoed after having had chronic pain for multiple years 2. Finally going to a physical therapist who suggested the idea. I’ve been at this school for the past two years (and where I will continue to be for the next 5 including this year), and I’m just scared. For context, I was never super athletic at school (Never on sports teams and stuff), but a lot of people know I figure skate at a high level which I know will confuse them because dynamic disabilities can be confusing.

I’m scared of how people will act, especially of what teachers will think or say, of how I’ll be treated differently, I’m scared of having to explain to people (especially because I know people will ask “what happened” because I kinda became involuntarily popular for just being someone people could always turn too), but I have been bullied in the past and I don’t doubt it’ll get any better when they see the local trans kid using a cane or crutch.

Do you guys have any tips or advice on how to deal with it? I guess just deal with the staring, or whispers, especially because teenagers can be dicks. Maybe tell me some things to expect to hear from adults and peers. Or just any tips on surviving school as a teen with a mobility aid, or even gaining the courage to use one publicly even when you haven’t before.

No but seriously the United States desperately needs to have a discussion about segregation against the disabled in our school systems and we can start with how anti-masking and perfect attendance policies have forced medically vulnerable kids to either put themselves at grievous risk or pull out of school all together

I feel like there are a lot of people out there who needs to hear this:

If you dropped out of school because of diagnosed (or undiagnosed) ADHD, Autism, ADD, OCD, Dyslexia, Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar disorder, psychotic disorders, schizophrenia etc… You did not fail. The education system failed you.

the injustice of the rat grinders technically playing by the rules and getting lauded for it because they have discipline and are generally Good at School vs the bad kids literally saving the world every other day and having to play catch-up to be acknowledged for it. the way that public school only caters to people who are good at "playing the game" of the education system and anyone that can't function how the school deems you should under its strict policies and conditions is tossed aside and called a failure. how are we feeling, american public school survivors?

Everytime I hear about a school shooting my mind goes to the disabled students, teachers, and personnel who can’t hide as smoothly as others, whose disability doesn’t allow them to be quiet and still, who can’t run…

I mean, obviously it’s a situation no one should be in but I hope there is something in place to help disabled people during a school shooting.

the other thing about being disabled in academia is everyone is like "yeah we can't do much about the buildings they're old :/" as if "old" being a synonym for "inaccessible" isn't just a constant reminder that the people who built the school did not imagine that someday someone like me might study there

I got an offical diagnosis for my learning disabilty as a child, but it did not help me as much as it should have

"don't make it political!" .... what proportion of death and suffering must occur before politics are involved. if this isn't political, what is even the point of any politics, ever. of democracy. the words are "by the people for the people." if i am going to be left alone by my elected representatives to "figure it out" - to undergo damage, hardship, fear. what the fuck did i elect them for. what was their job. the entire point is that they handle this shit. this is why we were supposed to be electing leaders.

poverty is political. misogyny is political. gun control is political. climate change is political. how much aid a community gets is political. what the fuck are you talking about. it's been political this whole fucking time.

just a reminder that if an accessibility aid would help your quality of life, then you can use it.

this goes for everything from wheelchairs and noise cancelling headphones to fidget spinners and acupuncture rings. You don’t need a diagnosis to start accommodating yourself. Especially on the mobility side. Trust me when I say that the only people who want those are people who need them. you aren’t taking resources from others you are using them as intended. you don’t need anyone’s permission to make your own life easier.

Gearing up for September already 😫

I have a dosage calc exam before school starts, and I can’t go to clinical if I don’t pass it (we can only get 1 question wrong). I got this book from Level Up RN to practice. Also learning some basic pharmacology to give me a head start for that.
